ISLAND CONSERVATION CENTRE

Otehei Bay has a long and rich history. For generations it’s been home to a wide range of native plants and wildlife, as well as being a relaxed island getaway for local and international visitors.

ENQUIRE NOW

Important visitors would come from all over the world to visit even as modern New Zealand was still in its infancy. As the popularity of the island grew, so too has the threat to the precious native wildlife and the need to protect them.

The islands of Ipipiri (Eastern Bay of Islands) have been pest free since 2009. Project Island Song works to keep them that way, you must do your part too. Before you visit these pest free islands, STOP, CHECK your gear for pests and then GO (have fun)!
Here in Otehei Bay’s conservation centre, you can learn all about the island’s original natural inhabitants and the ongoing efforts to protect them, as well as the remarkable history of the island.

  • Familiarise yourself with the Island’s rich and long history during a short video presentation
  • Learn about the restorative work Project Island Song and DOC are working on to return birdlife to Urupukapuka Island
